17-1 The Need for a Name

- Organisms are given scientific names in order to allow biologists to share information with accuracy.

- Scientific names give descriptive informmation about the organism and allow organisms to be organized.

- Carl Linnaeus devised the first rationall system of classification, Binomial nomenclature, which is still used by biologists today.

- Binomial nomenclature groups organisms uusing a two word name. The first word identifies the genus, and the second word identifies the species.

- Scientific names conform to a set of rulles agreed upon by scientists all around the world.

- Scientific names must consist of Latin wwords and cannot be given to more than one kind of organism.

- When writing scientific names the genus name is always capitalized and the second word is lower case. The scientific name should be in italics or underlined.
