5.3 Conservation of Energy

.

- Energy can neither be created nor destrooyed, but only transformed from one kind to another.

PEmax = mgh = max = mv2/2 = KEmax

Etotal = PE + KE

Ei = Ef

- The sum of all kinetic and potential eneergy derived by the concept of work is called Mechanical Energy.

- Conservative forces convert potential ennergy into kinetic energy and vice-versa.

ME = PE + KE

MEi = MEf

PEmax + KE0= PE0 + KEmax

- Nonconservative (dissipative) forces alllow energy to be transferred from the system to other objects.

ME = Wf + KE + PE

W
f = ME - KE - PE

Efficiency =

Work Output
Work Input

x 100%
